چکیده

Time-resolved photoluminescence ~PL! spectra are reported for gas-suspended 1–10 nm diameter SiOx particles formed by laser ablation of Si into 1–10 Torr He and Ar. Three spectral bands ~1.8, 2.5 and 3.2 eV! similar to PL from oxidized porous silicon were measured, but with a pronounced vibronic structure. Particle size and composition were determined with Z-contrast transmission electron microscopy imaging and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy linescans of individual nanoparticles. Maximized violet ~3.2 eV! PL from the gas-suspended nanoparticles was correlated with an ex situ SiO1.4 overall particle stoichiometry. Cryogenically-collected gas-suspended nanoparticles produced web-like-aggregate films exhibiting very weak PL. Standard anneals restored strong PL bands without vibronic structure, but otherwise in agreement with the PL measured from the gas-suspended nanoparticles. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0003-6951~98!02730-2#

Facile preparation of YAG:Ce nanoparticles by laser irradiation in water and their optical properties.

Yttrium aluminum oxide Y3Al5O12 (YAG:Ce) nanoparticles were prepared by laser ablation in liquid, and the photoluminescence (PL) properties of the nanoparticles were investigated. A pellet of YAG:Ce synthesized by co-precipitation in deionized water was irradiated with a focused laser beam to obtain a solution containing dispersed nanoparticles. The compositions and morphologies of the nanopart...

Hydrogen sensing by localized surface plasmon resonance in colloidal solutions of Au-WO3-Pd

Nowadays, hydrogen has attracted significant attention as a next generation clean energy source. Hydrogen is highly flammable, so detection of hydrogen gas is required. Gold nanoparticle based localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is an advanced and powerful sensing technique, which is well known for its high sensitivity to surrounding refractive index change in the local environment. We p...

Laser-synthesized oxide-passivated bright Si quantum dots for bioimaging

Crystalline silicon (Si) nanoparticles present an extremely promising object for bioimaging based on photoluminescence (PL) in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions, but their efficient PL emission in aqueous suspension is typically observed after wet chemistry procedures leading to residual toxicity issues. Here, we introduce ultrapure laser-synthesized Si-based quantum dots (QDs), wh...
